From 2010 through 2012 I had the pleasure of photographing a very unique machine shop in Lawrence. Bolton-Emerson Americas started manufacturing paper pulping machinery in 1905 and has been in continuous operation at the same location ever since. Over that time little has changed. Much of the equipment in the machine shop, wood shop and heat treat areas is original. The latest equipment upgrade occurred in the 1970s.

My access to BEA was unlimited. During the two years of shooting I got to know the facility’s management and staff. I learned a bit about the company’s history and the industry they serve. I was even given access to the company’s original bookkeeping records, chronicling the first couple of years of sales.

I’ve compiled many of the images in the book, Industrial Light: Images from Bolton-Emerson Americas. Click the link for more information or click the buy button on the right to get your copy in either physical form or e-Book for iPad.

  1. Fantastic photos! I worked in the Engineering Office, back in 1965-68. My Dad was the Emerson Machine Shop foreman from 1935-77. This brings back many fond memories, thanks for the trip.
