The first time I walked into the Pacific Mill Machine Shop I felt like I was catapulted back in time. The Pipe Threading equipment is as old as the Pacific Mills, dating back to the mid 1800s. The only hints of modern day life in the room are some stray Budwieser bottles and a scooter, apparently owned by an employee of the management company. Everything else dates back to an earlier time. The centerpiece of the machine shop is the hulking Pipe Threading machine posted above.
The Pacific Mill is the latest stop on my Mill tour. I plan to spend a couple of (early) mornings a week in there over the next few weeks. In addition to the Machine Shop I’ll be photographing the bell tower and turbine room. I haven’t seen either yet, so I can’t report on them.
Tomorrow morning from 6:00 to 8:00 AM, I will be back in the machine. More photos to come.
