Of all the places in Lawrence I’ve photographed over the past few months, this location was by far my favorite.

The North Canal Gatehouse once controlled the flow of water from the Merrimack River into Lawrence’s North Canal. Of course more modern methods of control are used now by the Enel Company, who owns the dam that makes the electricity that they sell to National Grid (or something like that). But I digress.

Time stood still in the gatehouse. The gears, pulleys, rope and hooks that once control the gates are remarkably preserved. On much of the equipment, the cobwebs appear to be holding things together and sending the message, “do not touch.”
