Patriot Guard

My shot today is somewhat patriotic since today is July 4, Independence Day. Happy Birthday USA!

I shot the at the “I Did the Grid Road Race” on Memorial Day weekend. A 4 mile race to honor the sacrifice of CPL Christopher G Scherer, killed in action in Iraq in 2007.

The gentleman holding the flag is a “Patriot Guard Rider.” The Patriot Guard are a special breed. From Wikipedia:

“The group was initially formed to shelter and protect the funerals from protesters from the Westboro Baptist Church, who claim that the deaths of American troops in Iraq and Afghanistan are divine retribution for American tolerance of homosexuality. The Patriot Guard positions itself to physically shield the mourners from the presence of the Westboro protesters by blocking the protesters from view with their motorcade, or by having members hold American flags. The group also drowns out the protesters’ chants by singing patriotic songs or by revving motorcycle engines.”

The local chapter of the Patriot Guard Riders were invited to participate in the “Grid” race. They were asked to line the finish area for a half hour. They stood for an hour and a half, until every runner and walker had completed the course.
