The City Light

Its hard for me to find the words to describe last night’s opening reception to my show at the Lawrence History Center. I was completely overwhelmed. It was gratifying. It was humbling.

What we do as photographers and artists brings attention to us. We create something, present it, thus saying, “Look what I did!” We graciously accept praise, welcome constructive criticism, and tolerate the occasional detractors. Those three components are part of our creative lives — part of the business.

I was not prepared for the fourth. I wasn’t prepared for “Thank You.”

I was thanked countless times for photographing the mills — for documenting their existence. These building and the city of Lawrence (with all her modern day problems) have a unique place in our history. Shooting them is truly an honor. So to everyone who thanked me last night, I just want to say, you’re welcome. I can’t think of a better subject.

I also want to thank everyone who attended. And thanks to the Lawrence History Center for hosting my work.

Today’s image, I think is appropriate … a shot from the 6th floor of the Everett Mill at dusk, overlooking Lawrence.
