The Three Amigos

This past weekend was a getaway weekend for me. A quick trip to North Carolina to run the Black Mountain Marathon, a trail marathon in the Blue Ridge Mountains near Asheville in the western part of the state.

Normally, the day after a race like that would call for a couple of days off from physical activity. And believe me, one of the thing I like most about running a marathon is the good solid period of inactivity and excessive caloric consumption that follows! However, with a day to kill in the area before catching flights home, my friends, Josh, Bill and Hap (who roped me into running this race) had other ideas  – a day of hiking.

My first thought was, “these guys are crazy.” But I already knew that. I’ve known them for 10 years. They have run several 50 mile races and a couple of 100 mile races together, so the idea of a “recovery hike” after a marathon is quite normal for them. Besides, I didn’t want be the wimp in crowd. They would never let me live it down, so I went. Besides, I brought my camera gear on the trip and this was the best chance to use it.

So we hiked. The destination was Looking Glass Rock in the Pisgah National Forest. The hike was about three miles in (and up) and well worth it. Since it is winter, there were relatively few people on the trail so we were able to move right along.

And the view from the top was spectacular. Even with bare trees of winter.

I have a couple of shots from the trip that will make the blog, but I wanted to lead with this one … Josh, Bill and Hap enjoying the view from Looking Glass Rock.

Thanks for a great weekend, guys!
