Christopher’s Room II

For this Memorial Day, I’m going back to an image I shot in 2010 and recently reprocessed in Black and White.
This is the childhood bedroom of CPL Christopher G Scherer, USMC.
Chris was killed in Iraq in 2007 — on of the 6,000+ service men and women killed in these wars.
I just got back from Long Island where I visited Chris’ family and participated 6th annual “I Did the Grid” road Race that is run in Chris’ memory and in the memory of all who gave the ultimate sacrifice.
The Grid Race, like no other Memorial Day event I’ve ever attended, drives home the true meaning of the holiday. Each walker, jogger or runner who participates carries on their race bibs the names of four service men / women who were killed in Iraq and Afghanistan and are urged to reflect on their sacrifice. This year, over 600 people turned out in a cold rain to honor the fallen.
Although this image was shot three years ago, nothing has changed in Christopher’s Room. It remains in tact as a memorial to a son’s sacrifice and a family’s love.
This Memorial Day, please keep those who gave all in your thoughts.
