This image was captured about a decade ago from the city’s high service water tower, the highest point in the city. It has long been my favorite image of Lawrence. I originally published it in black and white, but recently revisited it at the request of a client, who asked if there was a color version. And I’m really happy for that request.
This view of the city is facing east and was captured in late morning. The light was really harsh, but the view was too good to pass up. Plus, I did not know if I would be able to get access to the tower again — under better light or not. In fact, I have not been back.
I opted for a vintage feel for this version. I wanted to bring out the tones bring out the brick and pull back the harsh shadows in the trees in the foreground. The contrast is low, but the I think the impact is high.
Let me know if you agree, or don’t agree.

Nice work Robert, the vintage look is great, I actually thought it was an old photo when I first saw it. So Mission accomplished, nice job pulling the detail of the brick, and for the life of me I never realized the hills surrounding the town. You made the best of a top light situation…as you always do
