If you are visiting the White Mountains and you’re looking for something unique and exhilarating to do, I highly recommend a drive to the summit of Mt. Washington via the Mt. Washington Auto Road. It is a toll road, so you will pay about $20 for the privilege of climbing 4,727 feet at an average 12% grade, for 7.8 miles on a twisting, narrow road. Oh… and there are no guardrails.
I’ve driven the road a few times — most recently, in the fall of 2017 when my friends in the NXNW group converged on the White Mountains for a few days. The Auto Road was an obvious destination, weather permitting, of course.
I caught this image that day from one of the scenic turnouts near the summit.
