Sunset Point Overlook

While most of the locations we photographed were off the beaten track, we did hit a couple of easily accessible spots. One of them was Sunset Point Overlook in Capitol Reef National Park.

We arrived a good hour and a half before sunset in order to secure parking spots in the relatively small lot. After a short half mile hike, we were greeted with this spectacular view — and the image does not do it justice.

The cloud coverage and structure to the east was absolutely perfect, as you can see. Anticipation was high for a spectacular sunset, but a thick bank of clouds behind us to the west threatened to keep the scene in shadow.

You’ll have to wait to see how the evening turned out. In the meantime, enjoy this late afternoon scene from Sunset Point Overlook.

  1. Really wish I had walked over to that side to see that view. Wonderful layers of rocky goodness! Great stuff and can’t wait for the sunset images!
