From 2010 through 2012 I had the pleasure of photographing a very unique machine shop in Lawrence, Massachusetts. Bolton-Emerson Americas started manufacturing paper pulping machinery in 1905 and has been in continuous operation at the same location ever since. Over that time little has changed. Much of the equipment in the machine shop, wood shop and heat treat areas is original. The latest equipment upgrade occurred in the 1970s.

My access to BEA was unlimited. During the two years of shooting I got to know the facility’s management and staff. I learned a bit about the company’s history and the industry they serve. I was even given access to the company’s original bookkeeping records, chronicling the first couple of years of sales.

I’ve compiled many of the images in the book, Industrial Light: Images from Bolton-Emerson Americas. Click the link for more information or go directly to Blurb to get your copy in either physical form or e-Book for iPad.

You may also purchase images from this collection on my SmugMug site.
